What is the history of NUJLS?
NUJLS was founded in 1998 by a small but dedicated group of thirty students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Since our inception, we have grown to reach over 750 students across North America. Conferences have been held in such locations as Texas, Michigan, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, San Francisco, Connecticut, and Chicago.
Who can be a member of NUJLS?
NUJLS membership is open to any LGBTQQI Jewish student. The membership process is currently being revised; please check back later for more information.
How can I learn more about/attend/present at/sponsor the NUJLS conference?
Held over a weekend, and co-hosted by a campus, the NUJLS leadership conference features speakers, text study, and workshops on topics such as Judaism and homosexuality, activism, relationships, ethics, coming out, and politics. Speakers and attendees come from across the United States and Canada. NUJLS conferences are annual events which occur in March or early April. The conference travels to different Colleges and Universities around the nation. The cost of attendance is subsidized, and we provide scholarships to participants in need of financial assistance. I do not know anything about Judaism. Will I be welcome at NUJLS?
Yes! We are a non-denominational organization that welcomes Jews of all backgrounds!
I am an observant Jew. Will I be welcome at NUJLS?
Yes! NUJLS takes special care to respect and plan for members of all levels of observance.
What does NUJLS do aside from the conference?
NUJLS provides a programming and consulting to queer Jewish students and to allies of queer Jewish students. NUJLS offers grants to LGBTQQI Jewish student groups or ally groups seeking to fund programs which target LGBTQQI Jewish students. We also provide ally training to Jewish and LGBTQQI professionals.
